  EUROPE

BEREY, Nicolas. [An early 18th century sea chart of Europe]
Nouvelle Carte Marine de Tous les Ports de L'Europe sur L'Ocean et sur la Mediterranée... Paris, Bernard Jean Hyacinthe Jaillot, c.1720. Original outline colour. 525 x 770mm. A good impression on heavy paper.
A separately-issued sea chart of Europe, engraved by Berey c.1650, here published by his grandson. A finely-engraved martial title cartouche fills the top right corner, a scale cartouche with eleven different national measures fills the top left. The dedication is to Louis Phélypeaux (1643-1727), Louis XIV's Secretary of the Navy. An uncommon yet influential publication: John Bowles had an English version engraved by Sutton Nichols, published c.1720. See BAYNTON-WILLIAMS: Investing in Maps p. 92, for illus. of English edition.
[Ref: 16629]    £2,200.00 ($2,794 • €2,499 rates)

 Greece

BEREY, Nicolas. [A scarce 17th century map of Greece]
Graecia. Paris: Berey, 1663. Original colour. 420 x 520mm. An excellent example.
A very uncommon map of Greece, engraved by Jan Swelinck after Nicolas Sanson. The title cartouche features an Ottoman ruler, highlighting the Turkish rule over Greece. ZACHARAKIS: 3608, this early state not listed, only a Langlois edition of '1677?'.
[Ref: 16597]    £2,200.00 ($2,794 • €2,499 rates)

 Switzerland

BEREY, Nicolas. [A scarce French carte-à-figures of Switzerland]
Carte Generale des treze cantons de Suisse, Vallay ligues Grise, Maison-Dieu & Valteline. 1654. Paris: Nicolas Langois, c.1675. Coloured. 405 x 520mm. Small repair at centre fold.
A rare map of Switzerland, a pirate copy of the map by Jodocus Hondius junior of 1630, itself a scarce map. The prospects along the top are Lucerne, St. Gallen, Bern, Solothurn and Schaffhausen, with larger views of Basel and Zurich in the bottom corners. The costume vignettes are pairs of nobles, merchants and peasants, men on the left and women on the right.
