CARRINGTON, Frederick Augustus. [A Victorian wall map of Scotland]
A Map of Scotland Divided into Counties Shewing The principal Roads, Railways, Rivers, Canals, Lochs, Mountains, Islands, &c. on a Scale of Five Miles to an Inch. London: Samuel Lewis, c.1846. Steel engraving with original colour. Six sheets, dissected and laid on linen in three horizontal sections. Each section 645 x 1340mm, total if joined 1935 x 1340mm. Each section folded into original morocco gilt covers. Covers worn.
A superbly-detailed map of Scotland, a true group effort: the map itself was drawn by Frederick Carrington, the hatchuring of the many hills by George William Carrington; the printing plate was a mixture of engraving by John Dower and etching by Thomas Harwood; but the vignette of Melrose Abbey was drawn by Thomas Allom and engraved by Henry Griffiths. It was published as the map to accompany Samuel Lewis's 'Topographical Dictionary of Scotland'.
