CHUNG HWA BOOK COMPANY. [A scarce Chinese folding plan of Shanghai]
[Shanghai.] Shanghai, 1932. Colour lithographic map, dissected and laid on linen, 535 x 790, folded into original case. Some small stains to map, colour stains on linen folds, case distressed.
An early 20th century town plan of Shanghai in Chinese script, showing the French Concession district, Huangpu River and The Bund (Waitan), railways, hotels and schools, with inset maps showing the Bund in better detail. The publishers still operate, now known as the Zhonghua Book Company. They are best known for their revised editions of the 'Twenty-Four Histories', the official histories of each Chinese dynasty from 3000 BC to the Ming Dynasty in the 17th century, a project begun in 1959 on the suggestion of Mao Zedong.
