CORPO DEGLI ASTRONOMI DI BRERA. [A large plan of Milan as capital of Napoleon's Kingdom of Italy]
Pianta della Città di Milano. Milan: Amminstrazione Municipale, 1814. Four sheets conjoined, dissected and laid on linen, as issued, total 1210 x 1390mm. A fine example.
A monumental town plan of Milan, commissioned in 1807, two years after Napoleon created the city the capital of his kingdom of Italy. Surveyed by the staff of the Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera (Brera Astronomical Observatory), it is extremely accurate and contains a huge amount of detail, with keys down both sides. The map was published just in time, on the 2nd January 1814; Napoleon abdicated in 11th April, and, despite resistance by his viceroy, Eugène de Beauharnais, the Austrians occupied Milan on the 28th April, annexing the remains of the Kingdom back into the empire.
