COXE, William. [Early map of Mont Blanc]
Mont Blanc and the Adjacent Alps. London: Thomas Cadell, 1789. 420 x 495mm. Narrow margins as issued.
Map of the environs of Mont Blanc, with the mountains and valleys engraved in relief rather than contour, and marking both Courmayeur and Chamonix. As tutor to the son of the Earl of Pembroke, the Reverend Coxe travelled through Switzerland four times between 1776 and 1786. His account of the mountains and glaciers fascinated the British public, and, according to Abbey, helped 'to apply to Switzerland the doctrine of the picturesque, taming the country for the tourist'. It was only the year after his last trip that De Saussure ascended Mont Blanc (1787).
