 North America

DE ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo. [An Italian edition of Sanson's important map of North America]
L'America Settentrionale Nuovamente corretta, et accresciuta secondo le relationi piu moderne, da Guglielmo Sansone... Rome, 1677. Original outline colour. 410 x 560mm. Very fine example.
Engraved by Giorgio Widman, this is a derivative of Guillaume Sanson's map of North America, in turn a reduction of his father Nicholas' four-sheet wall map of 1666. California is shown as an island, and the western Great Lakes are open-ended. McLAUGHLIN: 65, first state of three.
[Ref: 18322]    £1,850.00 ($2,344 • €2,126 rates)

DE ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo. [17th century Italian map of Tartary]
La Gran Tartaria divisa nelle sue parti principali.. Rome, 1683. 440 x 550mm.
A map of Tartary after Cantelli da Vignola, published in the Mercurio Geografico. Japan appears on the right, with only a narrow strait separating it from a mainland peninsula to the north; however this is not 'Ezo', as this is a separate entity to the north-east. The large title cartouche shows a Tartar family.
[Ref: 7687]    £800.00 ($1,014 • €919 rates)

 Near East

DE ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo. [Turkish Empire]
Stato del Gran Turco... Rome, c.1679. Original colour. 440 x 580mm. Trimmed to plate and laid on old paper for issue in a composite atlas.
The Turkish Empire, based on Sanson's map, prepared by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola and engraved by Giorgio Widman for the 'Mercurio Geografico'. TIBBETTS: 133.
[Ref: 11248]    £850.00 ($1,077 • €977 rates)

 The Holy Land

DE ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo. [17th century map of the Holy Land]
Terra Sancta sive Promissionis, olim Palestina, in duo divisa Regna, Israel, et Juda... Rome, 1679. Coloured. 435 x 555mm.
The Holy Land divided into Tribes, with an inset map of Ancient Syria and a title cartouche featuring Adam, Eve and the serpent. De Rossi has used both Sanson and Cantelli da Vignola as sources for this map. LAOR: 682.
[Ref: 19579]    £230.00 ($291 • €264 rates)

DE ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo. [An unrecorded variant plate of De Rossi's map of Scandinavia]
La Scandinavia Divisa nelli suoi Regni di Svezia, Danimarca, Norvegia e Paese dei Lapponi. Rome, c.1678. Coloured. 385 x 540mm.
A previously unknown plate, duplicating De Rossi's map of Scandinavia after Sanson, but without De Rossi's name and address or date. This plate is 35mm shorter and 15mm narrower; however the map is on the same scale, so Finnmark runs into the printed border, whereas on the usual plate there is enough room for 'Oceano Settentrionale' to be written in the Barentz Sea. It also lacks engraver Giorgio Widman's signature.
[Ref: 14677]    £950.00 ($1,204 • €1,092 rates)
