[A contemporary French map of the American War of Independence] Carte des Possessions Angloises Dans l'Amerique Septentrionale Pour Servir d'Intelligence à la Guerre presente. Traduite de l;Anglois Par J. Leopold Imbert 1777. Paris: Joseph Louis Modhare, 1777. Original colour. 540 x 730mm. Some repairs to edges.
The first state of this French map of eastern North America, highlighting the English colonies with an inset of the Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola and Jamaica. Published during the American Revolutionary War, this map gained importance from its second state, published at the close of the war in 1783, when it became one of the first maps to refer to the new 'United States'. The map was updated by Jean-Baptiste Eliot, a French military engineer sent to aid Geoge Washington, and privy to early drafts of boundaries agreed at the Treaty of Paris and the title re-engraved with a title including 'États-Unis' and attribution to Eliot.
