LEHEN, Capt. [A French Rounding of Cape Horn]
New Chart of South America according to the late Discoveries of M. Lehen Brignon. London: T.Kinnersley, 1759, Sheet 205 x 105mm, accompanied with an extra 2 pages of text
A map of southern South America published to illustrate the account of the French Captain Lehen's voyage to the South Seas in 1748, text included here. He followed the route of Admiral Anson in 1741, but, arriving at a better time of year than the much-delayed British fleet, had no bad weather so they took only eight days to sail from Le Maire Strait to rounding Cape Horn. However he arrived in Chile to find Lima and Callao destroyed by earthquakes followed by tsunamis. Despite this the ship loaded 2,500,000 piastres to take back to Rio de Janeiro, where they arrived, after another smooth crossing, in December, 1749. This map was published in the March edition of 'The Grand Magazine of Magazines. or Universal Register'. Mostly written by David Henry, the magazine was published as a competitor to the 'Gentleman's Magazine'. The circulation was never high and it folded in 1760.
