LETTS, SON & CO. [A 19th century map of the Far East]
Map of South-eastern Asia and Northern Australia Showing the Districts in Annam and Tonquin which France proposes to annex and to place under a Protectorate, The Portion of New Guinea proposed to be acquired by Queensland, And the Districts affected by the Volcanic Eruptions in Java. London, 1883. Original colour. Printed area 420 x 575mm.
A map of South East Asia and Australia showing the British, French, Portuguese and Spanish colonies. It was published as a supplement of The Graphic newspaper on September the 22nd of 1883 to illustrate three events with far-reaching consequences: the Treaty of Huế (25th August 1883), by which France established a protectorate in Vietnam; the eruption of Krakatoa the following day; and Queensland's attempt to annex Papua New Guinea to stop German colonial plans, contradicting the Btitish Government's position. The telegraph lines that allowed such news to reach London so quickly are marked.
