MASI, Giovanni Tommaso. [Panama with the Darien Scheme]
Carta Rappresentante l'Istmo di Darien o'sia di Panama. Livorno, 1763. Coloured. 250 x 215mm.
Map depicting the eastern half of Panama and part of the western coastline of Colombia. Marked on the map are many cities, including' Nuova Edinburg' - New Edinburgh, the famous Darien Scheme colony established by the Company of Scotland as a trading settlement in 1698. Although well located, with a good harbour, the colony was short lived. Attacks by Spanish galleons, and devestating illnesses caused the failure of the 'Darien Scheme' as it was now. This contributed to the dissolution of the Scottish Parliament and led to the Act of Union with England in 1707.
