 World Maps

MERCATOR, Gerard. [The most decorative Ptolemaic world map]
Universalis Tabula Iuxta Ptolemæum. Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius Jnr, 1618. Fine original colour. 350 x 490mm.
A map of the world according to Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria, showing the world as known to the ancients, with the semi-mythical island of Taprobana but no America or Cape of Good Hope. However Mercator has dropped the land-locked Indian Ocean shown on earlier Ptolemaic maps. The map was engraved by Mercator himself for his 1578 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geography'; however this example comes from an edition of Petrus Bertius's 'Theatrum geographiae veteris'. The flamboyance of the strapwork-and-windhead borders makes this map the most decorative of the Ptolemaic world maps. SHIRLEY: World 139, plate 118, 'His general Ptolemaic map is one of the finest available... elegantly engraved'.
[Ref: 16747]    £7,500.00 ($9,885 • €8,393 rates)

  BRITISH ISLES

MERCATOR, Gerard. [Mercator's Classic map of the British Isles]
Anglia, Scotia et Hibernia. Amsterdam, Henricus Hondius, 1623, Latin text edition. Coloured. 335 x 415mm. Repaired tear in the left margin, just entering the printed border; centerfold reinforced on verso, restoration at top and bottom margins not affecting the printed area.
Gerard Mercator had already died when this map first appeared in an atlas, in 1595. His heirs sold his stock to Jodocus Hondius, who issued his first Mercator atlas in 1606. This example comes from an edition published by Jodocus's younger son. The map has been compiled from various sources, each the best available for each region: England and Wales are based on Saxton; the east coast of Ireland is taken from the Laurence Nowell map prepared for William Cecil in the 1560s; and Scotland from Mercator's own wall map from 1564. The strapwork title cartouche and the florid engraving of the names of the seas make this a very striking map. KOEMAN: ME 27A; SHIRLEY: British Isles 180.
