 The Mediterranean

MOULLART-SANSON, Pierre. [The Old Testament Mediterranean]
Carte de la Geographie Sacrée pour l'Ancien Testament Paris, Robert de Vaugondy, c. 1740, coloured, 410 x 555mm
From Moullart's "Table Methodique". Showing the Mediterranean during Old Testament times with Israel divided between its tribes. The decorative globe suspended in the middle of the map includes the part of Australia mapped by Abel Tasman. On the right hand side of the map is a table giving the geneology of the Old Testament from the Great Flood until Abraham.

 Cyprus

MOULLART-SANSON, Pierre. [A scarce map of Cyprus in classical times]
Cyprus Praestantia nulli cedens Insulae Urbes suis antiquitus paruerunt Tyrannis, deindé, Novem Rgenorum Sedes fuerunt Regi Persarum... Paris, c1718. Original colour. 355 x 490mm. Centre fold reinforced on verso, otherwise a very fine example.
An unusual map of Cyprus, divided into nine classical kingdoms, based on the writings of Herodotus and Diodorus. The Roman roads are also marked, taken from the Peutiger Table. Pierre Moullart-Sanson (d.1730), grandson of Nicolas and nephew of Guillaume, was the third generation of the family to become 'géographe du roy'. He bought his uncle's stock and re-published the Sanson atlas with a few additional maps, including this and a map of contemporary Cyprus, both with an outline based on Paolo Forlani's 'Isola di Cipro' of 1571. In the title area there is some obvious signs of text erasure: we have been unable to find an example with the original text. BCCF: Maps of Cyprus 114.
