Tierra Nueva. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1562, Latin edition. 185 x 260mm.
The Eastern Seaboard from Labrador to 'La Florida', with 'La Bremuda' for Bermuda. It shows the discoveries of Jacques Cartier's first voyage to Canada and Verrazzano's voyages around Cape Fear. Engraved by Sanuto for Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. This example is from the first state (of three), with the platemark running off the top of the sheet, and the crack in the printing plate near Bermuda not very advanced. BURDEN: 30: MANASEK: figures 4.15 to 4.18, showing differing states.

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [One of the earliest maps of the American East Coast]
Tierra Nueva. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1564, Italian edition.
This example is from the first state (of three), with the platemark running off the top of the sheet; the crack in the printing plate near Bermuda that occurred by the 1562 edition is not very advanced. BURDEN: 30: MANASEK: figures 4.15 to 4.18, showing differing states.

Isola Spagnola Nova. Venice: Ziletti, 1574. 185 x 260mm.
A 16th century map of Hispaniola, published in Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. This is an example of the second state, with the top of the plate trimmed, without the sea monsters added in 1599.
[Ref: 17446]    £300.00 ($379 • €333 rates)

  ASIA
 Arabia

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [16th century Italian map of Arabia]
Arabia Felice nuova Tavola. Venice, c.1562. 190 x 260mm.
Ruscelli's 'modern' map of Arabia from his 'La Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo'. Based largely on the earlier Ptolemaic maps by Giocomo Gastaldi from 1548, the map extends from the Arabian Desert south as far as the Horn of Africa and includes modern day Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. Early settlements, rivers, mountains, lakes, and various topographic features are noted.
[Ref: 18343]    £400.00 ($506 • €444 rates)

  AFRICA
 Southern Africa

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [16th century map of Southern Africa]
Africa Nuova Tavola. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, c.1561. 190 x 260mm. A very good example
A 'modern' map of Southern Africa, published in Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. A feature of this first state is that the platemark runs off the top of the sheet: two maps were engraved on the same plate and the resulting sheet halved. NORWICH: 151.

  BRITISH ISLES

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [The British Isles after George Lily]
Anglia et Hibernia Nova. Venice: Heirs of Melchior Sessa, 1598. 185 x 260mm.
The British Isles, based on Lily's famous map but with fewer names. Originally issued in Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo', 1561, this is from a second plate used 1574 onwards. The original differences were negligible, but this is an example of the more decorative second state, with a galleon and two sea-monsters added. SHIRLEY: 221.
