The Eastern Seaboard from Labrador to 'La Florida', with 'La Bremuda' for Bermuda. It shows the discoveries of Jacques Cartier's first voyage to Canada and Verrazzano's voyages around Cape Fear. Engraved by Sanuto for Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. This example is from the first state (of three), with the platemark running off the top of the sheet, and the crack in the printing plate near Bermuda not very advanced. The British Isles, based on Lily's famous map but with fewer names. Originally issued in Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo', 1561, this is from a second plate used 1574 onwards. The original differences were negligible, but this is an example of the more decorative second state, with a galleon and two sea-monsters added. SHIRLEY: 221.
