 Eastern Seaboard

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [One of the earliest maps of the American East Coast]
Tierra Nueva. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1564, Italian edition. 185 x 260mm.
The Eastern Seaboard from Labrador to 'La Florida', with 'La Bremuda' for Bermuda. It shows the discoveries of Jacques Cartier's first voyage to Canada and Verrazzano's voyages around Cape Fear. Engraved by Sanuto for Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. This example is from the first state (of three), with the platemark running off the top of the sheet; the crack in the printing plate near Bermuda that occurred by the 1562 edition is not very advanced. BURDEN: 30: MANASEK: figures 4.15 to 4.18, showing differing states.
[Ref: 15810]    £1,000.00 ($1,271 • €1,123 rates)

 West Indies

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [Early map of Hispaniola]
Isola Spagnola Nova. Venice: Ziletti, 1574. 185 x 260mm.
A 16th century map of Hispaniola, published in Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. This is an example of the second state, with the top of the plate trimmed, without the sea monsters added in 1599.
[Ref: 17446]    £300.00 ($381 • €337 rates)

 Arabia

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [16th century Italian map of Arabia]
Arabia Felice nuova Tavola. Venice, c.1562. 190 x 260mm.
Ruscelli's 'modern' map of Arabia from his 'La Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo'. Based largely on the earlier Ptolemaic maps by Giocomo Gastaldi from 1548, the map extends from the Arabian Desert south as far as the Horn of Africa and includes modern day Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. Early settlements, rivers, mountains, lakes, and various topographic features are noted.
[Ref: 18343]    £400.00 ($508 • €449 rates)

 Northern Italy

RUSCELLI, Girolamo. [16th century map of Piedmont]
Tavola Nuova di Piemonte. Venice, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1562, Latin edition. 195 x 260mm.
Engraved by Sanuto for Ruscelli's 'La Geographi di Claudio Tolomeo'. A feature of this first state is that the platemark runs off the top of the sheet: two maps were printed from the same plate then the resulting sheet cut in half.
[Ref: 9195]    £250.00 ($318 • €281 rates)
