SELLER, John. [A British chart of the triangular Atlantic Trade]
A General Chart of the Western Ocean. London: W. & J. Mount and T. Page, 1748. 465 x 580mm. Narrow margins as issued , minor repairs to edges, a fine impression.
A chart of the North Atlantic between Land's End, Guinea, 'Wild Brazile', Florida and Newfoundland, the region of the triangular Atlantic trade. Merchant ships would fill with British manufactured goods, exchange them in West Africa for slaves and transport the slaves to the plantations of the Americas, where they would be exchanged for raw materials like sugar and tobacco, which would in turn be sold to the factories in England. The chart was first issued by John Seller in his 'Atlas Maritimus' c.1675. This example comes from Mount & Page's 'The English Pilot. The Fourth Book Describing The West India Navigation...', the first sea atlas of America containing charts only from English sources. See SHIRLEY: Maps in the Atlases of the British Library, M.M&P-5c for an edition of the following year.

SELLER, John. [A rare English sea chart of the Western Indian Ocean dedicated to the East India Company]
A Chart of the Western part of the East Indies. With all the Aejacent Islands from Cape Bona Esperanca to Cape Comorin. London: John Seller, John Colson, William Fisher & James Atkinson, c.1678. 430 x 545mm. A few small repairs.
A fine sea chart of the western Indian Ocean, dedicated to the East India Company. Orientated with north to the left, it shows from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Comorin in India, with the coasts of both the Red Sea and Persian Gulf surrounded by names. The title is within an ornate cartouche surmounted with the original arms of the East India Company, replaced in 1709. Originally published by Seller in 1675, this example was issued during the short-lived consortium of the four publishers, 1677-8, brought about by Seller's financial difficulties. At the time the Portuguese still had footholds on the eastern African including at Mombasa; before the end of the century the Omani Empire had driven them out.
