Double-hemisphere world map, surrounded by insets illustrating the basins of the Amazon and Tocantins; La Plata; Great Lakes and St Lawrence; Rhine, Danube and Dnieper; Volga and Ural; Indus; and Ganges and Irawady; Mississippi and Missouri; Yenesei. The comparative heights of the mountain ranges are banded to denote the vegetation and geology.

An uncommon, double page engraved map by G.H. Swanston. It shows an oversized Nebraska, extending from the Missouri to the Continental Divide; meeting the Oregon Territory (which is also oversized). There is no sign of Nevada or Colorado and the large Utah Territory stretches between Nebraska and California.
