A detailed map of Peru and Bolivia, drawn and engraved by John Rapkin, for the 'Illustrated Atlas', one of the last decorative atlases to be produced. This map still shows Bolivia with a Pacific coastline, land lost to Chile in the 1879-83 War of the Pacific. Being landlocked has severely affected Bolivia's economy, and in the present day they are still trying to negotiate access to the sea. With a decorative border and four attractive vignette scenes of Potosi, Lima, Tarija and the swimming couriers of Peru

Original map of Central Asia, including the Caspian, Kazakstan and Kyrgystan, with three vignette scenes of Tartar life. The area was the scene of the Great Game, a mixture of exploration, espionage and diplomacy, played between Russian and Britain, as the Russians attempted to push their empire south to British India. Marked on the map are the cities of Bukhara, Khiva, Merv and Tashkent, which had been unknown to outsiders less than fifty years before.
