 World Maps

ZATTA, Antonio. [18th century map of the World on Mercator's Projection]
Il Mappamondo o sia Descrizione Generale del Globo Ridotto in Quadro. Venice, 1774. Original outline colour. 295 x 430mm.
The world on Mercator's Projection. Dated 1774, although it has the route of Cook's 1769-70 circumnavigation marked, New Zealand has not been updated other than being divided in two. Bougainville's route is shown. Greenland is shown connected to North America, and Alaska is oversized.
[Ref: 18996]    £400.00 ($517 • €467 rates)

ZATTA, Antonio. [18th century world map showing Cook's first voyage]
Il Mappamondo o sia Descrizione Generale del Globo. Venice, 1774. Original outline colour. 285 x 390mm.
Double-hemisphere world, engraved by Zuliani after Novelli, with lettering by Barat. The four corners are filled with allegorical women representing the continents, each escorted by a large animal. Captain Cook circumnavigated New Zealand 1769-70: the map marks his route around the world, yet the only alteration made to the pre-Cook outline of New Zealand is that it has been split into two.
[Ref: 19033]    £950.00 ($1,228 • €1,109 rates)

 Polar Maps

ZATTA, Antonio. [Pair of 18th century maps of the North & South hemispheres]
Emisfero Terrestre Settentrionale Tagliato su L'Equatore; Emisfero Terrestre Meridionale... Venice, 1779. Original colour. Two sheets, each 330 x 420 mm.
The north sheet shows a prominent North West Passage; the south the route of Captain Cook around Australasia.
[Ref: 19315]    £800.00 ($1,034 • €934 rates)

  AMERICA
 North America

ZATTA, Antonio. [The Bering Strait with a fictitious North West Passage]
Nuove Scoperte de' Russi al Nord Del Mare del Sud si nell' Asia, che nell' America. Venice, 1776. Original colour. 320 x 415mm.
Despite the map showing the Pacific coasts of California and Kamchatka to the Arctic Circle, the title vignette shows an elephant, rhinoceros, ostrich and crocodile. Also of interest is the imaginary Northwest Passage that connects Hudson's Bay with Cape Fortune. One of the most bizarre maps of the Pacific Northwest.
[Ref: 19326]    £650.00 ($840 • €759 rates)

 United States

ZATTA, Antonio. Il Canadá, Le Colonie Inglesi Con La Luigiana, E Florida, di nuova Projezione. Venice, 1800. Original outline colour. 320 x 420mm.
Eastern North America, with a fine title cartouche in full colour. First published in 1778, this example has the date changed to 1800, yet still the title refers to the 'English Colonies'.
[Ref: 9532]    £390.00 ($504 • €455 rates)

 Canada

ZATTA, Antonio. [18th Century map of Hudson's Bay]
La Baja D’Hudson, Terra di Labrador e Groenlandia con le Isole Adiacenti. Venice, 1778. Original outline colour. 320 x 410mm.
Hudson's Bay and southern Greenland. " Michinipi ovvero l'acqua grande" (the "great waters") is the entrance to Zatta's North West Passage, as seen in his map of North America.
[Ref: 9531]    £150.00 ($194 • €175 rates)

ZATTA, Antonio. [18th century map of Newfoundland]
Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton di Nuova Projezione. Venice, 1778. Original colour. 445 x 340mm.
Newfoundland and Cape Breton. The title vignette shows fish being dried, an indication of the importance of the fishing industry there, even in the Eighteenth century.
[Ref: 19020]    £325.00 ($420 • €379 rates)

 West Indies

ZATTA, Antonio. [18th Century Italian map of Jamaica]
La Giammaica. Venice, 1784. Original outline colour. 335 x 435mm.
An attractive map, with Jamaica printed within a trompe-l'oeil 'scroll', and the parish borders highlighted with colour.
[Ref: 9445]    £380.00 ($491 • €443 rates)

ZATTA, Antonio. [Eighteenth century map of the West Indies]
Stabilimenti de Francesi, Inglesi e Spagnuoli nelle Isole Antille Di nuova Projezione. Venice, 1795. Original outline colour. 325 x 420mm.
The West Indies - Caribbean and Southern Florida., with a fine title cartouche. First published 1785 in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo.
[Ref: 18091]    £360.00 ($465 • €420 rates)

 Bermuda

ZATTA, Antonio. [One of the most decorative maps of Bermuda]
Le Colonie Unite dell’ America Settentr.le di Nouva Projezione...; Le Isole Bermuda. Venice, 1778. Original colour. 325 x 435mm. A very fine example.
The title-sheet of a twelve-sheet map of the United States, with Bermuda shown on a trompe-l'oil scroll. Bermuda has an interesting cartographic error. The first authoritative map of Bermuda was compiled by Norwood in 1622 and published by John Speed in 1627. Behind the main map Norwood superimposed the coastline of New England and Virginia to show the relative position of Bermuda. Although Zatta has dropped this mainland from his map he has retained the small Bermuda, mistaking it for another island in the chain. This confirms that Zatta's source for this map was over a century old! PALMER: Printed maps of Bermuda, p.26, plate xxxi.
[Ref: 16570]    £2,000.00 ($2,586 • €2,334 rates)
