In 1797 the Treaty of Campo Formio ended Venice as a power, dividing its territories between France and Austria, France taking several of the Greek islands in the Ionian Sea, including Lefkada. However the French made themselves so unpopular that the Greeks welcomed a combined Russo-Ottoman fleet which took Corfu and set up the 'Septinsular Republic' in 1800, the first self-government, however limited, that the Greeks had experienced since the end of the Despotate of the Morea in the 1460s. The Republic was short-lived: the Russians handed the islands back to France in 1807 in the Treaty of Tilsit.
