Hartford Shire Described. The Situations of Hartford, and the most ancient towne S. Albons with such memorable actions as have happened. London, George Humble, 1627. Coloured. 385 x 515mm. Small repairs to edges, shiny glue remains on reverse.
Engraved by Jodocus Hondius, this is one of the most decorative maps of the county, with town plans of Hertford and St. Albans, a strapwork title cartouche, a stylised battle and two cartographers in the lower corners. On verso is a English-text history of the county.

An example of William Web's rare re-issue of the Saxton map of Herefordshire, the first printed map of the county, engraved by Remy Hogenberg in 1577. Web has made only two significant changes: the date has been updated, and the arms of Elizabeth have been replaced by those of Charles I (with a unicorn instead of a Welsh dragon. SKELTON: 27.

Web has made only two significant changes: the date has been updated, and the Royal Crest is that of Charles I rather than Elizabeth I (with a unicorn instead of a Welsh Dragon), although the engraver has left behind the Queen's initials, 'E R'.
