CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria. [A complete set of Coronelli's 17th Century maps of China]
[A two-sheet map of China, with seven maps of the provinces.] Venice, c.1690. Nine sheets, ea. c. 455 x 605mm.
Coronelli's monumental two-sheet map of China, dedicated to the Jesuit Antonio Baldigiani and decorated with surveying instruments; and all seven of his maps of the provinces, each with a decorative title cartouche. All in very fine condition and dark impression.

Imperii Sinarum Nova Descriptio. Amsterdam: Schenk & Valk, c.1690. Original colour with additions. 465 x 520mm.
Decorative map of China, with ornate cartouches for the title and scale. Van Loon's map first appeared in Jansson's 'Atlas Novus' in 1658, and as a late addition to the atlas is relatively uncommon. This example was published by Schenk & Valk from the 1690s, with their names added under the vignette sea battle.

A map of China, based on Blaeu but not including Japan, engraved by van Winter. It is an uncommon map because it did not appear in an atlas but as an illustration to Martino Martini's account of China, included in ''Des Welt-berühmten Adami Olearii'', an edition of Adam Olearius.

China and Japan, with an almost-square Korea and Chinese Tartary. Above Japan is the semi-mythical islands of 'Jesso' and 'Company's Island'. Above Japan a text reads 'Whether Japan be an Island, or joyned to ye Land of Jesso, is mot yet determined...'. From Moll's 'Atlas minor or a new and curious set of sixty-two maps, in which are shewn all the empires, kingdoms, countries, states, in all the known parts of the earth, with their bounds, divisions, chief cities & towns, the whole composed & laid down agreable to modern history'.
