NOLIN, Jean Baptiste. [A rare four-sheet wall map of France dedicated to the Sun King]
Le Royaume de France avec ses Aquisitions; Divisé en Provences et en Gouvernments, etc. Dressé sur les Memoires les plus Nouveaux, et Dedié a Louis le Grand, Roy de France et de Navarre. Paris, 1705. Original outline colour. Four sheets conjoined, total 970 x 1290mm. Laid on canvas.
An impressive wall map of France, with southern England and Holland, and the states of western Germany. It celebrates Louis XIV's victories early in the Nine Years' War (1689-97); the cartouche top right contains 14 medallion maps and plans of battles and towns. The title cartouche features the king in armour, one foot pressing down on the head of a gorgon, surrounded by allegorical figures. One of Louis's advisors holds a scroll with a map of England, a thinly-veiled statement of his intent to invade Britain in support of the deposed James II. This map was originally published in 1692; by the time this edition was published the Nine Years' Wars had finished, but the War of the Spanish Succession had begun, again with England as France's main opponent. Apart from the new date, the only apparent difference for this edition is the advert for Nolin's other maps of France above the title.
[Ref: 19443]    £2,200.00 ($2,666 • €2,400 rates)

PRICE, Charles & Senex, John. [Uncommon two-sheet map of France]
France Corrected from the Observations communicated to the Royal Academy of Sciences at Paris. London: Charles Price, John Senex & John Maxwell, c.1711. Original outline colour. Two sheets conjoined, total 660 x 960mm. Some restoration, as usual with these large maps.
An early example of this large map of France, drawn by Price and engraved by Senex. Their partnership did not last later than 1711, after which Senex issued many of their maps in his 'English Atlas' from 1714. The decorative title cartouche freatures a portrait of Louis XIV, surrounded by allegorical figures. Around the coastline of both France and the south of England are lines marking the "sea coast according to Mess.rs Sanson & the Dutch Maps": this is an unusual example of one cartographer highlighting the mistakes of others.
