SUKHTELEN & OPPERMAN. [Detailed folding map of the 'Patriotic War of 1812']

A large and detailed map of Russia, based on the survey by General Quartermaster von Sukhtelen & Major General Karl Oppermann, a monumental work on 100 sheets, published in St Petersburg 1801-4. This edition was published the year of Napoleon's ill-fated invasion of Russia.

A large and detailed map of the theatre of Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, his greatest mistake. The map covers from Berlin and Dresden east to Moscow and Kiev, marking the important roads for both the routes of the the army and the later supply lines, and the sites of all the battles.

The Russian Dominions in Europe, drawn from the latest Maps, printed, by the Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg; revised and corrected, with the Post Roads & New Governments, from the Russian Atlas of 1806. London, James Wyld, 1843. Original colour. Pair of steel engravings, each c.560 x 940mm. Minor repairs to binding folds.
A large and detailed map, extending west to east from the Baltic to the Urals and north to south from the Arctic Ocean to Georgia. Originally published in 1808 the recent imperialist rivalry with Russia, especially in Central Asia (the 'Great Game'), had renewed British interest in that country. The tensions led to the Crimean War a little over a decade later. Normally this map is found dissected and laid on linen, so this is a better than usual example.

ALEPH [HARVEY, William]. [Pictorial map of Russia]

Anthropomorphic map of Russia. The text below the image reads, "Peter, and Catherine and Alexander, Mad Paul, and Nicholas, poor shadows wander Out in the cold: while Emperor A. the Second In Eagles, Priests and Bears supreme is reckoned". From a charming atlas of caricature maps of European counties, drawn, according to the preface, by a fifteen-year-old girl to muse her sick brother. The author, was however, William Harvey (1796-1873), a London Doctor and Journalist, best-known for his book 'London Scenes and London People', 1863. The maps contain many references to the political changes sweeping through continental Europe, with representations of Garibaldi, Bismark & Tzar Alexander II.

A map of Russia and Siberia marking the Trans-Siberian Railway, halfway through the 25 years it took to build. It shows the main line and the spurs to VThis example was published two years after Russia lost the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5); the limitations of the one track in operation at the time contributed to the defeat.
