RUSSELL, J. [Chart of the Magellan Strait from Hawkesworth]
A Chart of the Straights of Magellan, in which are Inserted the Observations and Discoveries, of Cap.tn Byron, Cap.tn Wallis and Captain Cartaret. London: Strahan and Cadell, 1773. 625 x 625mm. Binding folds flattened.
A detailed chart of the Strait of Magellan, engraved by Russell for Hawkesworth's 'An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere...'. The chart was not engraved in time for the First Edition, but was only included in the second edition (the same year as the first). Although Hawkesworth's book contained the Official Account of Cook's First Voyage, this chart owes nothing to Cook's discoveries. In fact he never went through the strait, rounding Cape Horn on the first two voyages and the Cape of Good Hope twice on the Third.

A detailed sea chart of the Rio la la Plata, separating Uruguay from Argentina, marking Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Lighthouses are marked in colour. At the time of publication the Paraguayan War (1864-70) was being fought between an alliance of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, and Paraguay, a power-struggle for control of the Rio de la Plata basin.
