BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans. [16th century town plan of Brussels]
Bruxella... Cologne, 1572-, Latin text edition. Coloured. 330 x 480mm. A fine example
Early 'map-view' of Brussels, published for the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas of printed town plans. The major buildings are shown in profile, with little consideration for perspective, with a 56-point key. KOEMAN: B&H 1.
[Ref: 14660]    £900.00 ($1,188 • €1,008 rates)

ORTELIUS, Abraham. [The Flanders "Egg" map]
Flandria. Antwerp, 1574, Latin text edition. Coloured, with gold highlights. 390 x 505mm. Page number added in old ink mss. on verso: the ink has burned through the paper, leaving small holes, which have been filled.
The so-called 'Egg' map, because of its oval strapwork borders. This example has the pagination of the 1574 edition of the Theatrum erased and the number of the 1579 edition added in old ink mss: the publishers were obviously using up the remainder of an old edition. Normally the 1579 edition would have the map from the second plate, which has the woman holding the shield in contemporary dress rather than classical. VAN DEN BROECKE: 75.
[Ref: 12924]    £900.00 ($1,188 • €1,008 rates)

ORTELIUS, Abraham. [First issue of this 16th century Dutch map of Hainaut]
Nobilis Hannoniae Comitatus Descrip. Auctore Jacobo Surhonio Montano. Antwerp: Christoph Plantin, 1579, Latin edition. Coloured, with gold highlights. 380 x 485mm.
Antique Map of Hainaut after Jacques Surhon. This map first appeared in the Additamentum of 1579; the text of this example matches that edition, but the original pagination '20b' has been erased and the pagination of the full Theatrum of that year, '30', written over the erasure in ink. The publishers were obviously using up the remaining sheets printed for the Additamentum. VAN DEN BROECKE: 70.
[Ref: 12892]    £300.00 ($396 • €336 rates)

BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans. [Early townplan of Sluis in Belgium]
Sluys. Cologne, 1581-, Latin text edition. Original colour. 290 x 405mm.
Sluis in Belgium, from Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed townplans.
[Ref: 9914]    £220.00 ($290 • €246 rates)

ORTELIUS, Abraham. [The Flanders "Egg" Map]
Flandria. Antwerp, 1584, Latin text edition. Original colour with additions. 390 x 505mm. Bottom centerfold repaired, verdigris weakness reinforced on verso.
The so-called 'Egg' map, because of its oval strapwork borders. This example is from the second plate of two, introduced in 1579, with the woman holding the shield in contemporary dress rather than classical. VAN DEN BROECKE: 76.
[Ref: 10563]    £980.00 ($1,294 • €1,098 rates)

BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans. [Hoefnagel's beautiful two-sheet townplan of Antwerp]
Antverpia. Cologne, 1598. Two sheets conjoined, total 450 x 785mm. A few small repairs to binding folds.
This two-sheet bird's-eye view of Antwerp was prepared for Volume V of Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', published 1598. These large antique maps are often badly damaged because they were folded several times to fit into the atlas: however this example is surprisingly in good condition.
[Ref: 11935]    £1,500.00 ($1,980 • €1,680 rates)

ORTELIUS, Abraham. [Flanders]
Flandria. Brescia, c.1598. 80 x 100mm, set in a page of text.
Flanders, from an Italian pirate edition of Ortelius's Epitome atlas. KOEMAN: Ort 69.; VAN DEN BROECKE: 75.
[Ref: 9150]    £75.00 ($99 • €84 rates)

QUAD, Matthias. [AN early 17th century map of Flanders]
Flandriae Descriptio. Cologne, Bussemacher, c.1600. Latin edition. 210 x 275mm.
Engraved by Johannes Bussemacher, published in Quad's 'Fasciculus Geographicuss'. Title above coats-of-arms at upper left. Additional text above map and in cartouche at lower right.
[Ref: 16566]    £250.00 ($330 • €280 rates)
