SCHENK, Pieter.
Atlas Contractus Sive Mapparum Geographicarum Sansoniarum Auctarum et Correctarum Nova Congeries. Amsterdam, c.1700. Folio, full later calf, with stamped & gilded hinges; engraved title page & 51 double-page maps in fine colour, including one folding, with index. Archival tissue reinforcement on the verso of some maps affected by verdigris.
An attractive folio atlas consisting of fifty-one maps in fine original colour, including maps of the world and four continents, a polar projection, maps of the Turkish Empire and Holy Land, a distance table, a map of 'Schlaraffenland', an imaginary land of idleness and luxury, equivalent to 'Cockaigne', the remainder being maps of European countries. One map, Catalonia, does not appear in the index, and was probably added at the behest of the original purchaser of the atlas. KOEMAN: Vol III, p. 115.
[Ref: 10767]    £30,000.00 ($45,210 • €35,040 rates)
