DE BRUYN, Cornelis.
Ierusalem. Delft: Henrik van Kroonveld, 1698, 305 x 1235mm.
A spectacular panorama of Jerusalem taken from the Mount of Olives., published in de Bruyn's 'Reizen... door Klein Asia...van Aegypten, Syrien en Palestina'. Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726) was a painter who travelled through the Holy Land and Near East. Under the Ottomans the making of 'graven images' was prohibited; in Jerusalem de Bruyn avoided detection by pretending to be picnicing with two Franciscan monks who stood guard while he made his preliminary drawings. LAOR: 967.
