GERRITSZ, Hessel.
Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae, Caeterarumque Regionum Illi Adiacentium Exacta Descriptio, with: Lectori S. Hunc Borysthenis tractum ut ad nostrum Geographiae tabulam.. Amsterdam: Willem Blaeu, c.1640. Original colour. Six sheets conjoined, total 750 x 1060 mm
Hessel Gerritsz's limpressive wall map of Lithuania and the Dniepr River, decoratated with several cartouches, ships and a compass rose in the Baltic. It was engraved by Gerritz in 1613 and originally issued separately but, like Gerritsz's map of Russia, was later purchased by Blaeu. Being on six sheets it was one of the Blaeu's largest atlas maps. Apparently there was only ever one state: the plate carries the signature 'Guilhelmus Janssonius', before Willem added the 'Blaeu' to distance himself from his rival Jan Jansson.
