Rare maps of Pomerania and Diethmarchen

DE JODE, Gerard.

Pomeraniae utriusq Continentis ... [on sheet with] Thietmarsorum Simbricae Schersonesi Populorum ...
Antwerp, Cornelis de Jode, 1593. Latin text edition. Two plates on one sheet, 160 x 450mm & 145 x 225mm.

Repairs to left and right margins, otherwise a very fine example.

Maps of Pomerania after Munster and Diethmarchen after Peter Boekel. First published 1578 in Gerard de Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', the maps were originally on one plate, with a map of Prussia bottom right. For the second edition, published by Gerard's death by his widow and son Cornelis, the plate was cut and the Prussia replaced by a full-page plate. This edition was to be the last: after the death of Cornelis in 1600 the plates were bought by Vrients, then the owner of the Ortelius plates, merely to suppress them.

KOEMAN: Jod 2.
