A sea chart of Lyttelton Harbour, now the port of Christchurch, with a profile of the entrance to the harbour. It was surveyed by officers of the French corvette 'L'Héroïne', under the command of Jean-Baptiste Cécille, on its circumnavigation 1837-9. They visited Lyttleton to protect French whaling interests on the Banks Peninsula. At the time the chart was published a French colony ship landed on the peninsula, although their plans were thwarted by the Treaty of Waitangi, signed by the Maori chiefs earlier in the year.
