A 17th century map of Ireland with an extensive index
VISSCHER, Nicolas.
Hiberniæ Regnum...
Amsterdam, c.1698. Fine original colour. 565 x 475mm, with extra strips pasted at sides, extending to 745mm.
A large and detailed map of Ireland, with the major roads marked. Unusually the 'Alphabeth-Tafel', a huge index of towns and villages that normally appeared as a separate sheet in Visscher's atlas, had been cut in two and pasted on the sides of the map. The two title cartouches feature characters from Greek mythology: in the title are Pan, Demeter and Hermes; in the scale cartouche are Perseus riding on Pegasus to rescue Andromeda from Cetus the sea-monster.
BONAR LAW: DS 3, state ii of ii.
