A scarce and decorative map of the Americas: the large title cartouche shows an allegorical figure representing the continent holding up an arrow, surrounded by a mountain lion, alligator and a snake. The routes taken by Captain Cook across the South Seas in 1768-71 & 1771-76 are marked: these trips included his circumnavigation of New Zealand, his exploration of the Bering Straits and his death on Hawaii. Despite Cook's failure to find a North West Passage one is shown.
