An early map of Scotland by Gerard Mercator, best known for the world map on a rectangular projection named after him, and for using the word 'atlas' to describe a book of maps.
First issued 1595, it is decorated with a large strapwork title cartouche incorporating a scale of 'Miliaria Scotia'.
