A map of Wales engraved from a manuscript map drawn by the Welshman Humphrey Lhuyd (1527-68), an M.P. and personal physician to Lord Arundel. He tragically died at the age of 41, five years before his map was first published, by his friend Abraham Ortelius. This version was engraved by Pieter van den Keere and first published in 1607, in the second Hondius edition of Mercator's atlas. This example is from the second state of 1636, with a new title cartouche and without van den Keere's name: as it was only used in three editions before being replaced with a new plate it is comparatively scarce.
