Map of the environs of Mont Blanc, with the mountains and valleys engraved in relief rather than contour, and marking both Courmayeur and Chamonix. It was published in Coxe's 'Travels in Switzerland'.
As tutor to the likes of Samuel Whitbread and the son of the Earl of Pembroke, the Reverend Coxe travelled through Switzerland four times between 1776 and 1786. His account of the mountains and glaciers fascinated the British public, and, according to Abbey, helped 'to apply to Switzerland and the doctrine of the picturesque, taming the country for the tourist'. It was only the year after his last trip that De Saussure ascended Mont Blanc (1787).
