A map and four coastal profiles of Pitcarin Island, named after fifteen-year-old Midshipman Robert Pitcairn of HMS Swallow, commanded by Captain Philip Carteret, who was the first European to see the island in 150 years. Carteret had the island mapped but the longitude was incorrect by about 3°, resulting in Cook's failure to find it again in 1773. In 1790 nine of the Bounty mutineers settled there.
This plate was published in Hawkesworth's 'An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere', which contained the official account of Cook's First Circumnavigation.
