The Web edition of Saxton's map of Essex
SAXTON, Christopher.
Essexiæ Comitat Nova vera ac absoluta desciption Anº D.ni 1642.
London: William Web, 1645. 415 x 525mm.
Trimmed top and bottom, printed border reinstated with mss.
An example of William Web's rare re-issue of the Saxton map of Essex, the first printed map of the county, engraved in 1576. Web has made only two significant changes: the date has been updated, and the arms of Elizabeth have been replaced by those of Charles I (with a unicorn instead of a Welsh dragon), although the initials 'E R' have been left behind in error.
SKELTON: 27.
