SCOTT, Francis Henry.

Map of the Peninsula of India, Comprising the whole of the Madras Presidency, and Portions of the Adjacent Territories of Bengal and Bombay. Scott, Deputy Quarter Master General of the Madras Army and corresponding in all its details with the Road Book Compiled by that Officer.
Madras: 1855. Fine original colour. Dissected and laid on linen in two sections, as issued, marbled paper covers, total 1320 x 990mm, folded into original slipcase.

A large and detailed map on a scale of an inch to 24 miles, with the hand colour unusually fresh. Compiled by Scott with assistance from the Grand Trigonometrical Survey of India, the map was drawn up by J.S. Harvey and engraved by J. & C. Walker.
In 1853 Major Scott published 'Routes in the Peninsula of India: Comprising the Whole of the Madras', also published in Madras. Its prime motive was ascertaining how far troops could travel in a day on different routes. His work took on great importance during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, only two years after this map was published.
In the preface he describes the difficulty of anglicising the names from the multitude of languages, dialects and accents of the subcontinent. He also states that this map had been completed and was about to be sent to England to be engraved.
