A view of San Francisco, looking up California Street from Montgomery Street towards Nob Hill. with the Parrott Building, St. Mary's Church and Grace Cathedral. Steam-powered trolley cars are shown moving between barrels littering the street, a decade before the introduction of the cable cars.
Edward Hildebrandt was born in Danzig in 1818. From 1860 - 1862 Hildebrandt went on a world tour, which included stops in the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam (Thailand), Macao, Hong Kong, China, The Philippines, Japan and the United States. He worked mainly in watercolour. A folio of his works from his round-the-world voyage was published as chromolithographs in 1864 in Berlin. The original watercolours from the voyage were exhibited in London in 1866 and at an exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1868, just a year before his death in Berlin.
