Detailed map of London in 1812

FADEN, William.

A New Pocket Plan of the Cities of London & Westminster with the Borough of Southwark Comprehending the New Buildings and other Alterations.
London, 1812. 445 x 900mm.

A few small repairs.

Well engraved plan of London, extending to Knightsbridge in the west, clockwise to Lisson Green, Somers Town, Islington, Bethnal Green, Rotherhithe, Newington & Lambeth.
Of interest is Tomlin's New Town: since about 1790 nearly a hundred small wooden houses had been erected in the marshy fields just north of Tyburn turnpike, let out at £7-12 per annum to journeymen artificers who worked in London. Despite a population of about 600 there was no drainage or sanitary arrangements, so Tomlin's New Town was a new-build slum, filthy and disease-ridden. However the 1816 Building Act evicted the residents to make way for the construction of 'Tyburnia', around Connaught Terrace.
