A serio-comic map satirising Ronald Reagan's view of the World

HORSEY, David.

The World According to Ronald Reagan.
Seattle: AA Graphics Inc?, c.1984. Lithographic map, printed colour. Sheet 500 x 700mm.

Slight damp staining.

A satirical map of the world, probably published for the 1984 Presidential Election, It appears to be an intermediate edition of David Horsey's maps with the same title, published in 1982 and 1987, without the caricatures of President Reagan and his Russian counterparts as a gunslingers.
Most of the references come from the 1982 edition, California is enlarged to fill half the USA, with the rest divided between the Mid and South-West ('Republicans and Other Real Americans'), and the North-east ('Democrats and Welfare Bums').
South of the border is 'Mariachi Land', El Salvador, 'Our Canal' and 'Banana Land'. Cuba is a 'Soviet Colony' and the Falklands Islands, two year after the Falkland War against Argentina, are almost as big as South America. A new addition to the map is Grenada, a year after the U.S. invasion.
Across the Atlantic another addition is the reference to 'Thatcher Land' being 'A Subsidiary of Disneyland'. Elsewhere a tiny Europe is labelled 'Our Missiles'; and Africa is divided between Egypt and 'Negroes'. In Asia, a huge Israel also contains Beirut; Arabia is marked 'Our Oil' and Persia 'Muslim Fanatics'; mainland China is 'Their China' and Taiwan 'Our China'; and and 'Japan Corporation' is shaped like a car. The 'Palestinian Homeland (Proposed)' is in the Arctic, prior to its removal to the South Pacific in 1987.
David Horsey (b. 1951) was an editorial cartoonist working for the Seattle Post Intelligencer when he drew these world maps. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1999 and 2003 and now works for the Los Angeles Times.
