A decorative plan of Elizabethan London

AGAS, Ralph.

London and Westminster in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Anno Dom. 1563.
London, J. Wallis, 1789. Contemporary colour with some retouching. 410 x 1040mm.

Repairs to folds.

A reduced version of one of the earliest plans of London ever produced, tentatively attributed to Agas. The style is much the same as Braun & Hogenberg, with buildings shown in profile but, as St Paul's Cathedral is depicted without the spire that had been destroyed by lightning in 1561, this plan must be later. London Bridge has buildings on it and the Globe and the Bull-Baiting Ring can be seen on the south side of the Thames.
