An historical map of Milan, showing the city under siege by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I during his campaign to take control of the communes in northern Italy.
Frederick was reasonably lenient when he captured Milan; however, when the city revolted soon after, he returned in 1162 and destroyed much of it.
