An important new survey of Iceland

THORODDSEN, Thorvald.

Kort over Island udgivet of omarbejdet af Thorvald Thoroddsen. Kysterne efter Kystopmallingen 1800-1819; Bygderne efter Björn Gunnlaugsson's Opmaaling 1831-1843; det indre Höjland med Rettelset og Tilföjelser efter Th. Thoroddsen's Undersögelser of Maalinger 1881-1898. Med Carlsbergfondets Understoöttelse.
Copenhagen, 1900. Colour-printed lithograph on two sheets conjoined, dissected and laid on linen, total 670 x 950mm, folded into contemporary slipcase. Stanford label on map margin and slipcase, ads on linen.

A fine example of this detailed map of Iceland, drawn by H.P. Simonsen from older surveys but with mapping of the interior by a local geologist and cartographer, Thorvald Thoroddsen (1855-1921).
While undertaking a geological survey of the island (1881-98), Thoroddsen realised that Björn Gunnlaugsson, author of the best recent survey of Iceland (published 1848), had not visited some of the more remote areas of the interior, for example the region west of Vatnajokull. He began compiling cartographic data alongside his geological work, which appeared for the first time on this map of Iceland, published with the support of the Carlsberg Foundation in 1900. The following year the same map was published with coloured geological strata.
