A sketch map of the Galapagos, engraved for the first UK edition of Porter's ''A Voyage in the South Seas, in the Years 1812, 1813, and 1814. with Particular Details of the Gallapigos and Washington Islands''.
David Porter (1780-1843) was captain of the USS Essex during the War of 1812, targeting British whaling ships in the Pacific. The first edition of his book (Philadelphia, 1815) contained much anti-British sentiment which was removed for the English readership.
