Scarce 17th century map of Guinea
CLOPPENBURG, Johannes.
Guineae Nova Descriptio.
Amsterdam, 1632, Latin text edition. Coloured. 185 x 250mm.
The Guinea coast of Africa, with an inset of St Thomas, engraved by Dirk Cornilis for Cloppenburg's 'Atlas Minor'.
This pocket atlas was the least successful of three "Minor" versions of Gerard Mercator's atlas, and seems to have been supressed after 1636 until 1670. Most of the copperplates were engraved by Pieter van den Keere, but this map of Guinea was engraved by Dirck Cornelissen Swardt.
