A 16th century prospect of Warsaw

BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans.

Varsovia.
Cologne, 1617. Coloured. 320 x 470mm.

An early prospect of Warsaw from across the Vistula, published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first systematic atlas of town plans. Bottom left is an inset costume illustration, showing Polish nobles and a soldier. Originally issued as a two-volume atlas in 1572, the 'Civitates' expanded to six volumes by 1617. This view appeared in the last volume, so had a much shorter publishing history. Subsequently this plate is one of the rarest in the series.
