A 17th century prospect of Heidelberg by Wenceslaus Hollar

A fine panorama of Heidelberg from across the river Neckar, with a thirteen-point key of important buildings. The plate was etched by Bohemian Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) for Abraham Hogenberg of Cologne, during the decade Hollar spent in Germany before coming to London with patron, the Earl of Arundel. The plate was bought by Jan Jansson, who added the armorial and the title cartouche, as this example, and published it in his Townsbooks. There ere later editions by Johannes Janssonius van Waesbergen in 1682, by Frederick de Wit in c.1694, by Pieter van de Aa in 1729, and finally by Covens and Mortier c.1740.
