A rare separately issued map of the United States

Paris: P.A. Tardieu & Jean-Claude Dezauche, 1806. Fine original colour. Two maps, dissected, conjoined and laid on linen as originally issued, total 925 x 760mm, old French mss. title label on reverse.

A large folding map composed by matching maps of eastern North America and the Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies, drawn by Pierre Lapie but mostly based on the work of Aaron Arrowsmith. It was published only three years after the Louisiana Purchase, by which Napoleon Bonaparte sold the territory to the United States, and shows it coloured to match the U.S. Elsewhere Florida, West Florida and New Mexico is shown as Spanish. In the title cartouche of the upper sheet is the American Eagle with a 'halo' of 17 stars.
The date of publication, 5th September 1806, is less than three weeks before the end of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The maps are usually found separate, published in atlases c.1812.
