Covers stained and worn, a small stain on map, linen foxed on reverse, not affecting map, some pencil mss. on map.

An important map of northern Laos and Vietnam, undertaken to determine the borders between the new French protectorate Annam (Vietnam) and Siam (Thailand), hoping to encorporate Laos into Annam. It shows Hanoi and the Da River to Lai Chau and the Mekong River from Lakhonepheng north to Luang Prabang. Also marked is Dien Bien Phu, site of the battle that marked the end of French Indochina.
The map was surveyed by Captain Pierre Paul Cupet (1859-1907) and Lieut. M. Nicolon of the Foreign Legion, under the auspices of Auguste-Jean-Marie Pavie (1847-1925), head of the 'Mission Pavie', a scientific, geographic and political mission.
The presentation inscription is from Pavie to Georges Jules Piquet (1839-1923), Governor-General of French Indochina (1889-1891).
