Four diagrams of mechanical scientific instruments used in astronomy. Above is a 'trajectorium lunare', a device that delineates the paths of the earth and the moon through the year. Below is a table orrery, showing the motions of the planets and their moons, as built by William Jones of the London firm W. & S. Jones.
The plate was engraved by Andrew Bell (1726-1809) for the Third Edition of the 'Encyclopaedia Britannica', which he had founded with Colin Macfarquhar.
